This mix is my attempt to capture the original Industrial sound. It is the music that was first associated with the term Industrial and it features a lot of the original Industrial artists. The mix may be a bit on the artsy side for some, but I thought that I should set the mood before I started punishing people with EBM mixes. Thirty years on I would describe it as a Dark, Atmospheric, Soundscape featuring Industrial, Noise, Ambient, Musique Concrete and Neo-Classical elements. It is rated PG for those that care about such things, and it steers clear of the subject of sex. Sex and BDSM would actually become major themes within the Industrial genre. At that time it still had the ability to shock and the look was a natural progression from the Punk fashion that had preceded it. Today it's almost like a uniform, but it still provides tittilation and a way to "scare the squares." Obviously, it also worked as a metaphor for the times.

To put a historical perspective on it, the Viet-Nam war was finally over, the President had been impeached, the economy was in recession, there was an oil crisis and it was not uncommon to be stuck in a line around the block waiting to buy gas. Then mysteriously a lot of people started getting very sick. We know now that they had contracted the HIV Virus and that it had developed into Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome or A.I.D.S. At that time the Medical community was still trying to identify what this virus was and there was little that they could do for people that had become infected with it. For many A.I.D.S. was a terminal diagnosis. Our generation lost a lot of friends in a very brief period of time. This had a chilling effect on the culture and on the artists that were around at the time. These were dark times and that darkness was often reflected in this music. Fear, blood, sex, mortality and religion (the "taboo" subjects), all became grist for the mill for the artists operating at the extremes. These fearless people were the Industrial artists.

Classic Industrial E.B.M. mix. I'm actually going to record this one again. I'm going to add a Portion Control track and swap the RevCo track for the 12" version. I also want to tighten up some of the mixes. This is the first time I've tried mixing a set using this music since sometime in the eigthies, when all these tracks were new. It's kind of my musical history project, but hopefully it will also be a good listen for those that are into this type of music. I know not all of the artists are technically E.B.M. but they are included because I believe they were important in influencing the sound before the whole E.B.M. thing took off.

Twenty years ago I was spinning Industrial, Ten years ago I was spinning Trance. This is my first attempt at a mix featuring music that incorporates both of these styles. It is the first mix that I've done since 1987 that has vocals in it and I would say that it is poppier than anything I have done since 1987. I think of it as a crossover mix, or starting off at the shallow end. It's my way of introducing people that may be familiar with Trance to Industrial in a way that they will be able to appreciate and enjoy it. Although they have the same roots, people tend to be very tribal about music and will listen to one style and ignore another. So it can be a challenge introducing one group to the music of another. I personallly think of Trance as the soundtrack to parties and Industrial as the soundtrack for clubs. Having said all that though, there are people, including myself, that like both styles of music. So, who knows... enjoy.
