If you clubbed in Johannesburg last year,
you may have been lucky enough to hear a DJ by the name of Angelo Viera who
came in as a nobody to become one the best up and coming DJ’s in the dance
scene. Born as Angelo Oliveira in 1980, Angelo had very humble beginnings since
the start of his musical journey. Armed only with a cheap mixer and two fixed
speed turntables, he has risen in status and demand.
At the
peak of
South Africa’s dance scene in 2000, Angelo enrolled
for his first of two DJ courses after which it was up to him to create
something out of a very tight knit community in
South Africa. Trance and Hard House were the main
genres that were taking the worlds dance scene by storm and so most DJ’s followed suite, however
Angelo anticipated that a slower more down tempo sound would be the next big
thing and hence his move to House where he currently plays most genres under
the house umbrella.
Earlier residencies at cocktail bars and
small clubs such as Quantum and Jazz Time Café gave him the skills and
experience that is needed to master this art and grant him a passage to bigger
and better events. After being knocked out of the DJ’s on decks competition at
Flyhouse, Angelo Viera was able to win a first place in the DJ wars competition
2 years later. His real break came last year, after extensive networking and
demo drop off’s, when he was asked to open the dance floor at one of
Johannesburg’s most infamous Sunday rooftop club – Natural Groove. From here
things have seemed to rocket for this big dreamer. In September Angelo was
invited back to Natural Groove but this time to play the main set to a packed
floor of 600 clubbers and growing in strength to playing in front of a strong
1500 contingent of New Years Eve party goers in 2005.
Angelo Viera’s dreams came true when he
was invited to play as a support DJ for his first international act – Ian Carey
(from the Soul Providers) as well as getting a call from South Africa’s best
female DJ Lady Lea to play at her birthday party. This year he was lucky enough
to play along side Martin Solveig and SA’s finest house maestro’s Dino Moran,
Dean Fuel, Ricardo da Costa and Lady Lea.
Other achievements include playing at some
of the biggest parties and clubs from September 2005 to present such as: Mr
Spencer 10k party, Street party @ Groovebar, Shoukara NYE 2005, Groovebar NYE
2005, Club Central NYE 2005, Touch, the Groove Tour, Space Ibiza Tour, Rebirth
@Carfax, Citrus lounge, DCM, Shoukara, Wild Honey Pie, Cape Town vs Jo’Burg,
Celcius, 180 degrees,Capellos and many more.
