One trance compilation that seriously kicked my love for trance to new levels is Trancemasters. As far as I am concerned it is by far the best compilation series for Trance that has ever been compiled and is still going strong, it started with goa, and has progressed to the latest complex masterpieces that make up todays trance.
Inside and out of dance music, I have always had a love for female vocals. There is nothing quite like strong female singing voice to evoke the strongest of emotions from inside.

Nick Pateman, AKA DJ Abstraction, is a 25 year old professional software engineer from Kent, now living on the South Coast of England, a stone throw away from the clubbing capital of England, Brighton. He has been dabbling with computer software since the very early age of 5, and taking it up as a career at the age of 18. Although the world of software engineering and DJ’ing may seem worlds apart, his sole intention was to be able to convey emotions and feelings through the medium of computer software, unfortunately the route he took was not able to fill this desire, and so he decided to see if he could fulfil this need through a hobby instead.
DJ Abstraction has been mixing since the latter half of 2005. His first step into the world of DJ’ing was via low end computer hardware and mixing software, namely the Hercules DJ Console and Virtual DJ. He spent a year learning the basic technicalities of mixing Trance and building an extensive collection of music before upgrading to a Behringer BCD2000, in order to hone his skills with a more traditionally designed and ergonomic piece of hardware.
DJ Abstraction produced many mixes during his first year and a half, whilst sharing many of them with the online community of MusicV2. He also spent a considerable amount of time designing a set of graphics in order to represent is productions, as well as creating artwork for each and every mix that he releases. The reason for this is that he wants to provide mixes that create strong memories through every means possible, even the name.
In April 2007, DJ Abstraction finally took his initial step toward the professional side of DJ’ing by purchasing a set of Denon DNS-1000 CD Decks and a Numark DXM-06 Digital Mixer. After a short, but steep learning curve of the finer arts of mixing, and beat matching, he released his first mix set, named Eden, aptly named in order to represent the next stage of his dream, and feelings of personal accomplishment.
Shortly before DJ Abstraction had reached competency upon his new decks, he was contacted by someone on the other side of the world, DreamensioN, an extremely talented Australian DJ with a huge following of listeners. He approached DJ Abstraction about providing a guest mix for his monthly radio show on Afterhours.fm. That following month, Echos of Euphoria was released as a double CD Trance set, CD 1 mixed by DreamensioN, with the guest mix on CD 2 being provided by DJ Abstraction. DJ Abstraction remained good friends with DreamensioN after the first guest mix, and was honoured to also be given the chance to provide a CD for his popular trance series, Universal Language. Thusly, Universal Language 009 features CD 2 as a guest mix provided by him and to this day, remains one of his personal favourites.
Late September 2007, DJ Abstraction was contacted by the owner of Afterhours.fm and offered his own spot on the ever expanding, and hugely popular online EDM station. This was a proud moment for DJ Abstraction, as his first compilation series was born, Beyond Consciousness. Putting a vast majority of his spare time into perfecting his mixing technique, and developing his website so that people can keep up to date, as well as give feedback, DJ’ing has become a very big part of DJ Abstractions life.
His musical taste has always been quite eclectic as he draws from all corners of the EDM melting pot in order to provide a unique feel to his mixes. Taking inspiration from House, Electronica, Trance and Progressive, DJ Abstraction has developed his own style and following of regular listeners, proving time and again that he has something new to bring to the table. Although his skills are far from complete, he remains committed and passionate about DJ’ing as well as slowly learning how to produce tracks of his own, which he hopes that one day will be played by fellow DJ’s.
On a final note, DJ Abstraction would like to express a huge thanks to the producers of any tracks that he has used, or uses in the future, as well as anyone who has given him help, advice and feedback along the way. And of course, the biggest thanks of all goes to those that listen.

Radio SK Guest Mix
Description:
There is been a bit of a long delay in me publishing this one on my site for one reason or another
but a good few months back I was asked to do a guestmix for a Russian station called Radio SK. Thus and so, this is the mix that I provided. The track selection are all from the Progressive House pot and are all uplifting in mood. As you
would expect from me there are plenty of vocals in this mix. If you only usually hear down tempo
and moody progressive house sets then this one will be quite refreshing to you. My favourite track in the mix will be track 4, 'Breathe Life' with vocals from Andrea Britton. I
just love the tempo and energy of the track, along with the vocals it's just fantastic and will

'Radio', that was a mixup on my behalf, you'll just have to pretend I have an interesting accent.

UK In The Mix 3
Description:
Time for another awesome special show from Afterhours.fm. I was chuffed to be part of UK In The Mix 2 and this one is even bigger, with even Paul Oakenfold spinning on the decks! Being along side such an array of tallent I had to dig deep to find some quality choonage for this mix. It's been a little while since I started off with an intro track, Lovesong just stuck out to me. I love the electric guitar riffs in the track, and of course the vocals. My favourite track of the mix is track #6, with vocals from my favourite Trance vocalist, Tiff Lacey, bringing yet another quality track with meaningful lyrics. Description:
I thought it was time for another Vocal House mix from myself as I start a break from work. As for a theme for a mix I thought this one should signify just letting go and letting your true colours show through, just "Shine" so to speak. The observant of you will notice that I started with a Radio Edit, although I generally try to avoid short cuts of tracks I thought I'd throw in a few short tracks to keep things moving along, the end result is a 50 minute mix, so ideal for short train / car journeys.

Jolt
Description:
After being confined to my home with a kidney infection, when all I really wanted to be doing
was attempting to chat to a girl in my local bar who I think is fantastic, I ended up doing
this instead. So this mix is dedicated to her, the sad thing is, I don't know if she likes dance
music, nor do I know if she has any interest in me, I very much doubt she will ever hear the mix
either! Smooth arent I?... dont answer that please!
Anyway, the tone of the mix is extremely happy and fueled with desire. Hopefully it will make
you want to get up and dance, as that is exactly what I was doing while I was mixing it, much
to the despair of my poor kidneys!

UK In The Mix 2
Description:
This month I was extremely proud to be asked to do a mix for Afterhours.fm's "UK In The Mix 2" day, a whole day of DJ mixes performed by 24 DJs! How cool is that? This is my set that was aired at approximately 4pm on the day. It's a blend of Progressive House, Progressive Trance and Trance. It's also quite a sombre, down tempo mix that picks up some speed toward the end, hense why I only managed to fit 9 tracks into the hour. Buttercup
Description:
Buttercup is a Trance mix of the vocal variety. As usual I had great fun searching high and low
for the right tracks to use and have managed to find some real jems from some top artists. My
particular favourite track in the mix is Cant Help Myself, by DarkAlbedo. I just absolutely
love the way the chorus kicks in, sending rushes down my spine.
As for the name, unfortunately our British summer has yet to kick into action, but on one of the
odd days that the sun did come out, my little niece Madeline picked me a buttercup from the
garden, and as I already have a mix called Sunflower, I thought this would be a perfect name. So
this mix is done in anticipation of summer kicking in... bring it on!

Description:
Following on from my Jolt mix, I decided to do another Vocal House set. Although Jolt was mixed with someone in mind, this one is the complete and utter opposite. So here's to being on your own and in search of that someone special that you want to spend your time with. I'm a firm believer that there is someone out there for everyone, it's just a matter of looking in the right places. The mix is named Restart to prepresent just switching off for a while, giving yourself time to cool down before booting back up to get on with life ;-) My favourite track of the mix has to be the first one, although it's quite short the vocals are superb and hopefully set the mood for the rest of the mix. AH.fm End of Year Countdown
Description:
This is my final mix of 2007 for Afterhours.fm. It was aired on Christmas Day at 7am GMT (ish). It's quite a strong blend of styles, starting from an extremely commercial house track, then slowly blending into more progressive house, before coming back out the other end with a couple of vocal trance tracks. I'm hoping this set will appear to the more casual EDM fans that are likely to be listening on christmas day, and hopefully add a little kick to their day, before they know it they will be listening to progressive house. With any luck anyways!
