Phaydn – A Bio
From early childhood, DJ Phaydn (Chris) has been involved in music of some sort. He could always be found playing the trumpet in band, singing in school choirs or just sitting in his room enjoying his favorite artists play on the radio or CD. Born into a musical family, Chris’s Dad and Mom met in a country rock band. His dad has played guitar for 42 years and kept Chris trying all different kinds of guitar playing, trumpets, pianos, and drums.
At the age of 18, Chris graduated from
Robert
E.
Lee
High school
in 1998 and went off to his first semester of college at
Shenandoah
University
in
Winchester
,
VA.
There he studied Commercial Music (Recording Studios). Chris found a new love, Music production/performance of the electronic genre. Chris decided to come back home to the DC area after 1 semester to start with his career as a DJ back at home.
Chris’s first set of tables was purchased in 1999. Chris experimented with Trance, House, Breaks, Hardcore, and of course, Drum & Bass. In his spinning, his friends commented on the fact that Chris was noticeably better at spinning the D&B tracks that He had bought. These tracks were from the likes of JO-S, The Burner Brothers, Dieselboy and a Renegade Hardware vinyl set. Chris then came up with his first DJ Alias, DJ JTF.
Chris received his first gig in 1999 on the University of Maryland radio station 88.1 WMUC on a show called “In The Mix” that was ran by DJ Clutch of the U of M. His performance then led to meeting quite a few new contacts in the DC area scene through a message board on Hyperreal.org called “DC Raves”.
From that point, Chris was active in the DC Scene going to and promoting parties. He then met with DJ B-Styles who was throwing a weekly party in
Alexandria
,
VA
called Pure. Chris was asked to play this party, and from there, through promotion and gigs twice a month, Chris earned himself his first residency. This is also where Chris finally found his love in Hard Step D&B.
Phaydn would then spend the next 2 years building his arsenal of tunes by the likes of the Renegade Hardware crew, Dieselboy, Rawkiss and many others. In 2002, Chris received his first booking at The Edge nightclub in
Washington
,
DC
. Chris played a 2 hour set opening for Proxxy and wowed the crowd. In a time when The Edge had been dead due to college students going home for the summer, Chris packed the warehouse with standing room only and a standing ovation when the last record finished playing.
Phaydn ran into some family problems in 2003 and due to this, took some time off of his music career to handle these problems. After handling his family matters, Chris returned to his DJing under a new DJ Alias, Phaydn. Chris returned to his career playing at such venues as Nation night club on Thursday nights at a party called Alias, as well as Bridges Bar & Billiards in
Fairfax
,
VA.
Phaydn was then approached by DJ Trakskye of the East Coast Drum & Bass Trooperz crew based out of
North Carolina
. Through this connection, DJ Phaydn is now affiliated with East Coast D&B Trooperz. Through the East Coast D&B Trooperz, He has made appearances with the likes of MC Doombek, MindFreak MC (A.K.A. MC Akira), as well as played parties with such DJs as Nonchalant, Proximity and many others in the EC/Booty Basics Family.
Phaydn then droped his affiliation with East Coast D&B and joined up with Booty Basics with Mindfreak MC and other local Drum & Bass Talent in the newly formed Bass Militia. After building more of a name for himself, Phaydn broke away from Booty Basics as they persued a more successful movement toward their production of Booty House and Baltimore Club genres.
Phaydn is now affiliated with Hardware Conflict and Strangeland Records out of Northern Virginia. Phaydn has produced a few new original tracks and will hopefully be releasing more soon.
