: : : MACHETE : : : The Los Angeles drum & bass scene is hotter than ever these days, and no one seems to be catching more fire than DJ Machete. A founding member of the infamous Junglist Platoon and the lead visionary behind Los Angeles’ longest running weekly, Respect, Machete has earned himself a place in the upper echelon of the nation’s elite and with good reason. Originally coming up as “Rob G”, Machete’s journey began in the early 1990s rocking hip-hop at legendary afterhours spots like No-Doz, What?, and Caffiend. The Los Angeles rave scene was barely starting to take hold of the city and soon Rob found himself caught up in the techno-breakbeat culture that was being championed by the likes of R.A.W., CRS?, and Oscar Da Grouch. Attracted to the frantic old-school breaks layered with hip-hop/reggae vocal hooks, Rob plunged full-on into the underground, changing the course of his life forever. By 1994, the scene was alive and kicking and Rob and his close circle of friends could be caught out almost every night representing the crew they had just formed called the Junglist Platoon. Completely dedicated to the burgeoning jungle scene, the crew began passing out stickers and wearing t-shirts bearing their name in an effort to convert and connect with as many fellow like-minded heads as possible. It was a pure junglist vibe in those days and as Rob began making a name for himself behind the decks, he and some friends thought he should switch up his name to Machete to highlight his hard mixing and cutting skills. “What better way to cut through our urban jungle soundscape than with a Machete?” was the tag-line and soon, the Junglist Platoon name was everywhere as Machete began to tear his way through the local and national scene, even representing on the infamous Kung Fu Knowledge Tour of 1999 that featured the likes of DJ Craze and Rob Playford. In March of 1999, the Platoon themselves took things to another level, launching their now infamous weekly event, Respect. Machete took on the duties of securing the talent as well as serving as one of the clubs most in-demand residents. The club was an instant sensation and in 2000, the crew put on a Respect night in Miami at the Winter Music Conference and essentially announced to the world that the Los Angeles drum & bass scene was here to stay. Nine years later and the club continues to be one of the most successful and well-known events in the United States. Regularly featuring the very best local, national, and international talent, the longest-running d&b weekly in Los Angeles has no doubt played a major role in the emergence of L.A. as one of the world’s most formidable scenes. With the launch of Cal-Tek Recordings in 2001, Machete and the rest of the crew have also begun to push equally hard on the production front with numerous original recordings from the crew already pressed to wax and even more set to come. As for Machete, he’s busier than ever, having emerged as one of the most consistent and in-demand DJs on the west coast. Continually spreading the Junglist Platoon vibe across North America, Canada, and anywhere else possible, Machete has performed alongside heavyweights like Dieselboy, Andy C, Hype, LTJ Bukem, and Roni Size, along the way. Recently introducing Machete-Media.net into the mix, Machete hopes to continue to be a driving force in the scene, the website shaping up to be a one-stop shop for bass-heads looking for their d&b fix. A portal into the Los Angeles scene, Machete hopes the site will bring a new global awareness and recognition to local events, productions, and DJ talent all bubbling on Machete’s home turf.
