DJ Rokk - DJ Rokk, aka Paul Bryan began life behind the decks at the innocent age of just 10 years old. The kids’ disco he ran in Nottingham also sold fizzy pop and crisps. Fast forward 20 years and Rokk still has his fingers in many pies. He’s a resident at London’s famous Cock club night, has DJ’d in some of the coolest clubs around the world, and works with the likes of Kylie, Beverley Knight, Gorillaz and Jamelia at Parlophone Records.
But how do you go from selling Panda pop and pick ‘n’ mix to one of the hottest figures in the music industry?
Rokk’s journey was by no means traditional. He grew up on a diet of 70’s soul and 80’s pop. His first ‘proper’ job was as a Swimwear model followed by a Cutter in a Lace factory, and while at the time he was DJing at places like The Garage, Deluxe, Miro with 2 residencies and various bars in Nottingham, it soon dawned upon him that the world was ready for more of his inimitable style. He hopped on the National Express to London and it was there he started working in HMV Oxford Street and DJing at the Angel Caf? bar, Bar Fusion, The Friendly Society, and resident at clubs Factor 25 at the Hanover Grand and Queernation in Brixton.
The next step came after Rokk took a job on the switchboard at EMI. After playing mostly funky and vocal house at the aforementioned venues, he became tired of the scene and the same old crowd and decided to take a break from DJing. It was during this period that he took a copy of the Fischerspooner mix of Kylie’s ‘Come Into My World’ to Mark Moore and Jim Stanton (of The Cock), simply trying to plug the track. He caught their attention though and his break from the decks was cut short. Paul was made a resident at the legendary club in 2002, working alongside the likes of the infamous Princess Julia (with whom he gets on famously, of course).
During his little break from DJing, he started to listen to a different sound , namely the Detroit based label ‘ghostly international’ and a series of compilations called ‘disco nouveau’ that really caught his ear. With artists like Legowelt, Daniel Wang, Charles Manier and Solvent. With that as his base he started to search the Record shops and inernet for this muted disco, moroder-esque, electro sound. It didn’t take long for the guys upstairs at EMI to sit up and take note of the talent that was operating their phones. Paul was quickly promoted and now resides in the A&R department of the successful and effortlessly cool Parlophone label. In his role at Parlophone, Paul is responsible for commissioning the remixes for some of the label’s top-line acts. “The remixes are crucial to the perception of the artist in clubland. It’s a hell of a responsibility as you are helping to mould the reputation of an act.” Recently he’s used this responsibility to full effect and as a result, dancefloors have been pounding to Riton and Mylo mixes of Kylie, and a Boris D’Lugosch mix of Beverley Knight’s Keep This Fire Burning.
He’s even had a dabble at the mixes himself, being one of the faces behind the popular Synth City remix of ‘Slow’ by Kylie. “I had a go at a mix and the MD loved it, so I combined forces with friends and we worked on something that was worthy of international release”. Rokk aims to do more remixing and producing in the future “but it’s just trying to find the time…”
Rokk’s style is hard to pin down. In the past he’s concentrated on house, but when that got tired and he moved into new arenas he started to do his own thing. “I don’t like anything too straightforward or predictable, I like playing what people want but also what they don’t know they want to hear just yet”. It’s this attitude that has created his unique and diverse, yet distinctive style.
Residing at The Cock, he has taken to promoting the club and was responsible for getting Fischerspooner’ to perform an Exclusive dj set this year along with the talented ‘Seymour Bits’ from Amsterdam to perform at Horse Meat Disco.
“Musically, I try and mix abit of the old with the new because the electronic sound has its roots” This style has taken him around the world, touring with The Cock to Paris, Dublin, Lyon and even the Gay and Lesbian pride event in Croatia.
He also appeared in THE FACE magazine, as did the whole COCK crowd, for their contribution to the Alternative London Gay Scene in 2003. He also dabbles in photography and has submitted various works for The Guardian and I-D magazine.
DJ Rokk’s career already reads like a dictionary definition of cool, but there’s still plenty more where that came from; with plans for more production, mixing, and top class international DJing.
