“underground soul” is an eclectic mix of broken beats & funky soulful house evolving to a deeper tech sound, while maintaining a jazzy edge. inspired by recognized exponent of the style, italian-born eleonora cutaia, and producers like king britt, dennis ferrer & kerri chandler, among others, dj pheel sets the scene for an alternative phuture soul party!
born in london (uk), dj pheel (aka phil09) sought out an artistic pathway early, studying piano, saxophone and 1 year as a drummer between 12 and 18 years-old. while studying architecture at the renown barlett school at ucl, london, he was inspired by early jazz-funk fusions, including the works of miles davis and mongo santamaria. thus, in parallel, phil09 took up percussion, playing congas and effects before learning to play african rhythms on the djembé. he also participated in parties of the growing uk underground electronic scene in the late-80s, both as a percussionist and addicted partygoer
conscious of nu rhythmic tendencies in electronica, he worked on live fusions between these and percussion, strengthening his developing talent. living full-time in florianopolis, southern brazil, he began mixing electronic and organic percussion with deep/progressive house and break beat during early 2002, researching his own language in experimental electronica and idm, inspired by the talent and integrity of djs and producers like john digweed (bedrock) and jay denes (naked music)
in 2004, he moved to são paulo, where more recent musical research led him to the jazzistic, rhythmic world of the brazilian lounge/chillout scene, back to his early love of artists like miles, pat metheny and steve reich, and consideration of more recent broken beat/nu jazz mixes, including artists like jazzanova, bruno e, blue six & positive flow and to his inevitable encounter with digital pick-ups and the process of live mixing

ciente das novas tendências rítmicas na musica eletrônica, buscou a união entre esta e a percussão, fortalecendo o desenvolvimento do seu talento. já morando em florianópolis em tempo integral, começou produzir mixagens de percussão eletrônica e orgânica com batidas de house progressivo e break beat no inicio de 2002, e buscou uma linguagem própria em eletrônica experimental e idm, inspirado pelo talento e integridade de djs e produtores como john digweed (bedrock) e jay denes (naked music)
em 2004 mudou-se para são paulo, onde sua pesquisa o levou à redescoberta do mundo jazzístico, rítmico da cena brasileira de lounge/chillout, de volta ao seu antigo amor por artistas de jazz como miles, pat metheny e steve reich e consideração de mixes mais recentes broken beat/nu jazz, incluindo artistas como jazzanova, bruno e, blue six e positive flow e ao encontro inevitável com pick-ups digitais e o processo de mixagem ao vivo

ginga ... fluxo, dança, somente uma resposta ... dançar é muito perssoal, se o som não te deixa sentindo algo bem no âmago, escuta algo q faz...
“inner rhythm - ginga”... acredita ou não, isso é música house ... tudo quebrado ... quente, freaky, funky, soulful, broken-jazzy-beatz ... faixas selecionadas dos últimos 12 meses +/- daí, finalmente senti q era hora d fazer, pois alguns de nos precisa uma dose de algo mais q 4x4 p/ entrar no groove...
como falei, se ñ te deixa sentindo d+, escuta algo q te leva nas altura... e divide comigo
nb: preciso agradecer o bunnys de djban que tentou de tudo e qualquer jeito recuperar a versão original desse mix que apaguei por acaso bem no fim da sessão... deu no que deu, mas foi melhor, pois após essa, sentei e planejei o mix melhor, pratiquei várias possíveis progressões e somente depois, fui gravar o feelin de novo.

the initial idea that me & dj friend, “nego”, cooked up was a 60-70 min insert of underground soul b4 he got the party jumpin with his black/nu black mix. infected by “meus lindos amigos”, the party got underway well b4 time & on my last track i got persuaded to continue 4 another hour ... making the short mixset a warm-up session. we're planning a rematch of this birthday special, as soon as the club owner signs off on a nu friday night combo ... black+nu black/underground soul+funky house! stayed tuned!

i began researching “Natural Illumination” when three events simultaneously combined in less than 24 hours; i found the cover photo, i heard “Can U Feel It”, the original mix, by Positive Flow @ myspace and the new Blue Six CD “Aquarian Angel” finally arrived in the post after more than a months wait (imports, go figure??!)
