"The Tunnel 2008" A Tribute To DJ Louie Vega
Not long ago, while driving down 34th Street in New York City it dawned on me, there was another icon of the city's nitelife being torn down before my eyes. The Copacabana though not the original, which was located on 54th Street was nearly gone. Like so many famous nightclubs in the city it had fallen victim to the high cost of real estate, smoking laws, VIP bottle service (which has all but killed the nightclub industry), the high cost of a liquor licence, the list goes on and on. The great nightclubs like Studio 54, Limelight, The Sound Factory, Roxy NYC, Paradise Garage and the Palladium are now a faded memory. Turning onto 11th Avenue I realized another of the city's great nightclubs had been located just down the block. That nightclub was called "Tunnel".
The Tunnel, named for the abandoned train tunnel of the early 1900's was one of the most distinctive nightclubs of the late 80's and early 90's. Equipped with a notoriously loud sound system and unisex bathrooms (said to be the converted locker rooms of train workers decades prior) was often packed far beyond its legal capacity, which resulted in dangerous overcrowding. During large shows it was not uncommon for someone to be lifted off the floor by the crowd. Because it lacked air conditioning it was often hot and humid.
The Tunnel also had DJ Louie Vega. Now a producer, Louie Vega was one of my biggest influences. Vega would play everything from Freetsyle to Underground House Music to Madonna, and make it flow seamlessly. I've been told he'd ride two records forever, adjusting the sliders on the turntables with his eyes closed the entire time. Busy with my own DJ career at that time, it would have been impossible for me to see him live. Lucky for me Hot 97 WKTU in New York City had live broadcasts almost every Saturday night and I never failed to have someone record them onto cassettes for me.
I work with three lovely ladies who have shared their experiences of nights at the Tunnel with me. One of them asked me "If the Tunnel were open today and Louie Vega was the DJ, what do you think he'd be playing"? That gave me the idea for this mixset, but rather than just make another mixset I wanted to somehow capture the essence of Vega's mixing style using current music. After listening to several of my old cassettes of Vega, I carefully chose current music that I feel has a late 80's style. As far as mixing like Vega, I decided to do away with the tricks of todays technology. In other words, there would be no looping of music and I would record the mix using good old fashioned vinyl (though timecoded). My goal was to make a mixset that did not sound like I had made it. I think I've accomplished that.
So here it is, my tribute to Little Louie Vega, which opens with the sounds of 11th Avenue in the Chelsea section of Manhattan on a late Saturday night as my three co-workers Evelyn, Francine and Melinda join the crowd entering the Tunnel.
Mixset to be posted soon
