1986 And that’s when it started..... Way back in high school I got my first taste of the new style beats emerging from over the pond, Chicago "House" from the likes of Mr Fingers, Chip E, Phuture, Farley Jackmaster Funk, Adonis, Marshall Jefferson and Steve Silk Hurley to name but a few. It seemed that pretty much anything released on DJ International Records and Trax Records was a winner, but anything else that made me move had to be considered. 1989/90 and the birth of Acid House/Rave boosted me to stand up and pay real attention to the quality tunes being produced, such as Nightmares On Wax, Dr Baker, Shades of Rhythm, Liquid, Renegade Soundwave etc. I was also fortunate to live within walking distance of probably the most important music venue in the South of England, Sterns Nightclub. Those in the know, knew. This saw the birth and rise of new DJs such as Carl Cox, John 00 Flemming, Kenny Ken, Lenny D, Colin Dale, Micky Finn to name just a small few. Sterns, "The House on the Hill", was a rare club located in an old mansion on the southern slopes of the South Downs and boasted 4 separate rooms over 3 floors. The most famous club nights were started in 1991 by a promoter named In-ter-dance run by the late Mensa. Such was the club nights' reputation that it was one of the most well known Rave/Hardcore clubs in Europe and was regularly visited by clubbers from all over the UK. The main room was called the "Underground", complete with signs in the style of the London Underground logo and was located at the lowest level of the building partially embedded in the hillside in a large concrete bunker. This purpose built room boasted a massive 30 kW sound system and although buried in the hill side, its sounds could be heard for miles. The most popular events were the monthly All Nighters you had to be member to attend, and at its peak around 1992, In-ter-dance had over 25,000 members. I eventually decided to venture into DJ, as a hobby to produce my own mix tapes, starting off with a budget set of Soundlab DLP3 (direct drive I will have you know) before moving onto SL1210s, these would be replaced by Vestax PDX-A1, man they were awesome. Now I sport Stanton STR8-100 with Vestax PCV-175, however family life, work and home improvements mean I have no time to use them, booooooooo.
